Battery Series-Parallel Pack Sizing Calculator

For battery systems engineers designing high-capacity utility-scale BESS arrays who need to instantly validate their proposed series-parallel topology against target pack voltages and energy capacities before component procurement.

Determines total pack voltage and amp-hour capacity using standard combinations V_pack = V_cell * N_s and C_pack = C_cell * N_p.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter the nominal voltage and Amp-hour rating of your base electrochemical cell.
  2. Specify the number of modules stacked in series (Ns) to meet your DC bus voltage requirement.
  3. Input the number of parallel strings (Np) required to reach your desired storage duration.
  4. Read the resulting live Pack Voltage, Total Capacity, and Net kWh energy immediately.

FAQ

Q: How do I calculate total pack voltage using series strings?

A: Multiply the single-cell voltage by the number of cells in series (Ns) using the standard formula V_pack = V_cell * N_s to ensure the busbar rating isn't exceeded.

Q: What happens if I set the series cells to zero?

A: The calculator enforces a minimum positive integer for the series field, as you cannot establish a viable electrical potential difference without at least one cell in the chain.

Q: How is the total pack kWh capacity derived?

A: It computes E_kWh = (V_pack * C_pack) / 1000, which turns volt-ampere-hours (Wh) into kilowatt-hours; divide by 1,000 again for MWh.

Q: Once I size my pack, how do I check the thermal dissipation?

A: With the total amperage established via your Np value, use the Battery Internal Resistance & Voltage Drop Calculator for the voltage sag and the Battery Thermal Heat Dissipation Calculator for the I²R heat.
