X-Bar & R Chart Control Limit Calculator

For quality control managers setting up or auditing X̄–R charts who need the grand mean and average range turned into control limits without re-deriving the A2, D3, D4 and d2 constants for subgroup sizes 2 to 10 from the ISO 7870-2 / AIAG SPC table each time. X-bar and R control limits from the grand mean and the average range, with A2, D3, D4 and d2 looked up for subgroup sizes 2 to 10 (ISO 7870-2 / AIAG SPC constants).

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select the subgroup size n (2 to 10) used on the chart — this fixes A2, D3, D4 and d2.
  2. Type the grand mean X̿ in the same measurement unit as the characteristic being charted.
  3. Type the average range R̄ (the mean of the subgroup ranges) in that same unit.
  4. Read the X̄-chart limits, the R-chart limits and the estimated sigma directly below, with the substituted A2, D3, D4 and d2 formulas shown for each.

FAQ

Q: What are the formulas for X-bar and R chart control limits?

A: UCLx = X̿ + A2·R̄, LCLx = X̿ − A2·R̄, UCLr = D4·R̄ and LCLr = D3·R̄, where A2, D3 and D4 come from the ISO 7870-2 / AIAG constants table for the chosen subgroup size.

Q: What is the A2 constant for a subgroup size of 5?

A: A2 = 0.577 for n = 5, so the X-bar limits sit 0.577 × R̄ either side of the grand mean.

Q: Why is the lower control limit for the range chart zero?

A: D3 = 0 for subgroup sizes 2 through 6, so LCLr = D3·R̄ evaluates to exactly 0; D3 only becomes non-zero at n = 7 (0.076).

Q: How is sigma estimated from the average range?

A: sigma = R̄/d2; for n = 4, d2 = 2.059, so an average range of 8.0 units gives an estimated sigma of about 3.89 units.
